Transposition Reference

Semitones C C#/Db D D#/Eb E F F#/Gb G G#/Ab A A#/Bb B

How It Works

Transposition

Transposing means shifting every note or chord up or down by the same number of semitones. There are 12 semitones in an octave. Moving up 1 semitone turns C into C#, D into D#, E into F, etc.

Chord Recognition

The transposer recognizes chord roots (A through G) with sharps (#) and flats (b), plus any quality suffix like m, 7, maj7, dim, aug, sus4, add9, etc. Slash chords (e.g. C/E) are fully supported — both the root and bass note are transposed.

Common Transpositions
  • Capo on fret N — transpose down N semitones to find the shapes to play
  • Guitar to Ukulele — transpose up 5 semitones (a perfect fourth)
  • Bb instruments — transpose up 2 semitones for written parts
  • Eb instruments — transpose down 3 semitones (or up 9)
Enharmonic Equivalents

Notes can be written with sharps or flats: C# = Db, F# = Gb, etc. Use the notation toggle to switch between sharp and flat output. The tool preserves chord qualities and slash bass notes during transposition.
